At Blackhorse Judo Club we teach judo to children aged from 5 upwards as well as adults of all ages.

Opening in 2005, the club has highly qualified coaches with experience of teaching everyone from beginners through to experienced players training for major competitions.

Blackhorse Judo Club prides itself in teaching traditional judo under the guidance of the British Judo Council. We know that people feel better when they stay active, and we’re proud to offer first-class facilities designed to help you do just that. Blackhorse Judo Club trains the Sports Hall at the Winterbourne Academy, Bristol (formerly The Ridings International Academy in Winterbourne)

  • Please note: the entrance to the sports hall is at the back of the school, off Flaxpits Lane, so the postcode to use is BS36 1LA, and not the one for the entrance to the school (which is off the High Street.

Our Coaches:

The instructors at Blackhorse Judo Club are Penny Grigg (6th Dan), Joe Wakeham (2nd Dan), Wayne Iles (1st Dan) and Daniel Grigg (2nd Kyu). All are qualified and registered coaches with the British Judo Council.

Penny Grigg

Penny started judo in Cornwall, when she was 13. She was graded to 1st Dan (black belt) when 17,  winning her first National level gold medals as a Dan grade in 1979 and competing regularly throughout the 1980s. Moving into coaching when she retired from competition, she holds a Master's Degree in Education and a PhD in Education Technology, as well as both levels of the British Judo Council's coaching awards. She is currently a BJC 6th Dan, and has served as chair of the BJC Technical Centre's Coaching Committee and has represent the BJC on the National Source Group for Coaching for the National Governing Body for Judo, the British Judo Association.

Joe Wakeham

Joe started doing Judo at the Pyramid Youth Club in Filton as a child, and has been a coach at Blackhorse Judo Club for several years. Having won medals at national level, he has now moved into coaching and has both level 1 and level 2 coaching qualifications with the BJC and is a BJC registered coach in his own right.

Wayne Iles

After doing judo as a child, Wayne took a break for several years, starting back with us when his children decided to do judo. He has both level 1 and level 2 coaching qualifications with the BJC and is a BJC registered coach in his own right.

Daniel Grigg

Daniel started doing Judo when he was 6 years old, and has been acting as an assistant coach at the club for over half a decade. He has qualified as a level 1 with the BJC and is now a BJC registered coach in his own right.
